The articles discussed many different issues that occur in public education from school funding to reading programs and the No Child Left Behind Act. One of the articles discussed that it does not necessarily matter how much funding a school has because in the past there has been little funding for public schools but there was a higher literacy rate. I find this to be rather frightening, what is going on in public schools, where is the money going if students come out of school at eighteen still not knowing how to read? The curriculum has also gone back and forth between teaching children to read through phonics and teaching them through whole language, it is like a pendulum. Education always swings from one strategy to another trying to find the best way to teach children and yet nothings works one hundred percent of the time, but of course companies will always have some textbook to sell to our districts filled with the most recent up to date strategies that they know will teach our students everything they need to know. Public education teachers will just have to do the best that they can with what they are given and hope that their students are ready for the world when they graduate. However, with few public programs to help support students when they finally get out of school how can we expect them all to achieve their highest potential?
