If you're interested, I just came across this "closed" group (Badass Teachers Association) on Facebook. About: "This is for every teacher who refuses to be blamed for the failure of our society to erase poverty and inequality, and refuses to accept assessments, tests and evaluations imposed by those who have contempt for real teaching and learning."
just sent a request to join- very interested to see what they have to say!
They also have a new blog at http://badassteachers.blogspot.com/
For an organization that's only been around for a few days, it's really taking off. They now have over 13,500 Facebook members. There are some top names in higher education, a lot of teachers, and parents as members.
thanks. I have to say that between this class and seeing all the passionate posts on the BTA Facebook/blog, it's making me feel more empowered and riled up. Most of what is written makes me sad and angry, but I feel like there is some hope that things will get better since there are so many influential people starting to take a stance. Only time will tell, but I will keep my fingers crossed.
I joined, a lot of negative comments, and complaining in general, not sure if it is just the day I joined or what. Maybe it will get better, I dont think we have to be vulgar to make our point. It is great though to have movements like this, hope to see an impact in the future.
I will check out the blog, I have not read that yet. I just think venting can give us, more of a bad image. I think change can begin in a positive way, always!
I just removed myself from the group- too much complaining for me. It started off good, but then as other people started putting in their opinions it took an ugly turn. It is interesting seeing that the group is getting news coverage already though :)
I agree with the vulgar part. I think there is so much that needs to be said, however, teachers need to keep in mind professionalism and ethics. I wouldn't be interested in joining this group, I hear so much negativity in general I can only imagine what is being said. I am glad people are able to have an outlet to discuss problems in the profession, I just hope some don't take it too far.
